Bid Description:
Farmers are reluctant to reach out for professional help for stress and mental health issues but are more likely to access peer support. The Farm First program seeks to develop a farmer peer support network, where farmers can reach out to other farmers trained in peer support to obtain help and assistance to reduce stress and receive emotional support. Farmers have precious free time and thus the development of such a network will require considerable expertise in community organizing to find farmers interested in volunteering to be trained in providing peer support. We seek an individual with successful community organizing experience, ideally though not necessarily connected with the farm community. This person will work with Farm First and Agency staff to plan and host community education events to raise issues and awareness of mental health issues and farming to identify farmers potentially interested in being peer supports; this person will also do considerable individual outreach to farmers. The individual will host events and plan trainings for farmers interested in providing peer support. Ultimately, we seek to map out peer support individuals on our website, where farmers needing support can find peers to call.
