Bid Description:
The mission of Vermont’s Immunization Program is to prevent and control vaccine-preventable diseases in Vermont by increasing immunization rates among children, adolescents and adults. Vermont is a universal vaccine purchasing state. The program aims to increase vaccination coverage rates among Vermonters by reducing barriers to vaccination. All vaccines recommended by CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) are provided to healthcare providers at no cost for people birth-64 years of age. Eliminating cost as a barrier to immunization helps to ensure that all children and adults are vaccinated according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended childhood, adolescent and adult immunization schedules. Vaccines are the best way to prevent serious illness and death from many infectious diseases and they also protect communities by reducing the spread of illness. Vermont’s influenza vaccination coverage for school-age children and teens is low, increasing the risk of influenza infection for this population. While Vermont children and teens can obtain flu vaccination at little or no cost from their health care provider, the remaining access barriers may be responsible for lagging coverage. There are currently very few school-located vaccination clinics (SLVCs) for influenza in Vermont and no coordinated system exists. In school year 2018-19, five healthcare providers led flu clinics in 18 out of 416 Vermont schools.
